My son began to take propecia a month ago. He is also using Rogaine. I am sensing a serious emotional reaction – he is sadder, seems depressed, cries easily. These are not his usual personality traits. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this as a result of taking propecia.

i ran across your question while myself looking for someone who has been taking propecia for longer than a year. I took finasteride wich is the generic version of the drug for one year, i did not realize i was depressed till the end of that year, even though i should have been happy for lots of reasons wich would take along time to explain( good money, girls, nice car etc…) for short, i was having a hard time excepting myself. I should have been happy with myself but I started finding reasons wrong with me, I had quit smoking marijuana and it greatly contributed to my success in life but I found myself in the world of weed again and I started wasting my money on that crap wich is very addictive it is not like the weed from your era, anyways if your son uses marijuana you tell him to stop because the two is a very dangerous mix ( hair or high). your son most likely is experiencing sexual side effects with propecia and is sad because of that reason I feel for him, but i dont think that the depression has found him yet, if he still has lots of hairs but sees signs of thinning tell him to take half of the 1 mg dose , in fda approval process research conducted by MERK the producer of propecia it was noted that lower dosage(more than .02 grams) was just as effective in keeping DHT levels ( the reason for balding) down in the skin and scalp. hair transplants are expensive and useless ironicly after having a transplant when your young the doctors that perform the transplants always prescribe propecia ( finasteride) in order to keep your native hair ( the transplanted hair is geneticaly immuned to falling out) so you have three choices when losing hair 1. To go bald( not my choice) 2. Hair transplant wich needs to be done at least 2 times to have a full head of hair(not my choice) 3. Take propecia at a lower dose, excercise alot and stay awy from other drugs ( My choice). It is hard to lose hair and be expected to except the reality. I have started to take 1/4 of the 1 mg pill daily. Depression could very well be a side effect of propecia but when you think about our corrupt gov and marketing scheme of corporations you can see why we are not told about it. University of Tabriz located in IRAN Actualy proved this side effect in clinical testing. We are either depressed with losing hair or the drugs to fight it.
